Perry gained worldwide recognition in 2008 with her breakthrough album, “One of the Boys” and Grammy nominated first single, “I Kissed A Girl” which spent seven weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single became a worldwide smash hit in more than 30 countries and was followed by two more #1’s with “Hot N Cold” and “Waking Up in Vegas”. She's also known for her outspoken personality and bizarre fashion sense which have been derived from vintage pin-up girls and classic movie actresses.
Her parents, both pastors, have introduced her to music. She started singing in church at the age of nine until she was seventeen. She grew up listening to gospel music and her mother forbade her to listen to secular music. As a child, she learned dancing at rec halls in her hometown of Santa Barbara, California. Her dancing skills were honed by seasoned dancers who taught her different forms of dancing including swing, the Lindy Hop and jitterbug. Her parents encouraged her to take up singing lessons after her freshman year of high school.
MTV's co-executive producer Bruce Gilmer said that the organization dedicates a substantial amount of time and effort in searching for the perfect candidate for the said event.
"Katy's deep connection to the world of music, her dynamic and compelling personality and her worldwide appeal made her a natural choice," he added.
He also stated that Perry did an outstanding job in hosting the 15th MTV EMA which was held in Liverpool, England. Perry captured audiences at the 2008 MTV EMAs as she gave a spectacular opening by riding astride a giant cherry Chapstick. She was nominated for two categories, Most Addicitve Track and Best New Artist, wherein she snagged the award for the latter. Her hit single “Waking Up in Vegas” has been nominated for the Best Video category in 2009 MTV European Music Awards Live in Berlin.
